PM Benjamin Netanyahu Apologizes to Israeli Arabs for Election Day Remarks

Tonight, my wife Sarah and I’ve hosted, representatives from the minority sectors from all over the country, the Prime Minister’s home in Jerusalem. The meeting was warm and exciting.

My wife opened a greeting said: “We thank you for coming, the Prime Minister’s House is the House of all citizens of Israel.”

I said, “I know what I said a few days ago damaged Israel’s Arabs. I had no intention of it. I’m sorry for that.

“My actions as Prime Minister, including the investment in minority sectors, proves the opposite. I think, equally, not to any customer outside of the State of Israel will intervene in the processes of our democracy.

“I see myself as a Prime Minister of each and every one of you, of all citizens of Israel, without any distinction of religion, race and gender. I see all citizens of Israel share Israel’s deliverance, prosperous and safe, for the benefit of all citizens of Israel. ”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, made the following remarks at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting:

“Over there weekend there was a demonstration in Umm Al-Fahm in which infuriating calls and support for abducting IDF soldiers were heard. Most Israeli Arabs do not take this view and I call on their leaders to be courageous and strongly condemn such calls. As Israelis we cannot countenance such outrageous remarks that call for abducting Israeli soldiers. IDF soldiers protect all of us. We cannot accept infuriating calls to abduct IDF soldiers.

In many cases, those behind such calls and demonstrations are from the northern branch of the Islamic Movement. It constantly preaches against the State of Israel and its people publicly identify with terrorist organizations such as Hamas. Therefore, I directed the relevant authorities to consider declaring the northern branch of the Islamic Movement an illegal organization. This would give the security authorities significant tools in the struggle against this movement.

Over the weekend, the IDF attacked multiple targets in response to firing at Israel from the Gaza Strip .
We are ready to expand this operation as per need. I would like to reiterate that from the moment the Palestinian unity government was established with the Hamas terrorist organization, the Palestinian Authority became responsible for preventing firing at our territory from the Gaza Strip.

Over the weekend, the ISA revealed the identities of those responsible for the abduction of our three youths – Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar and Naftali Frankel and we are continuing to do our utmost to bring them home safely.

Immediately after the abduction, we said that Hamas was responsible. I think that it is now clear to everyone what we based ourselves. Abu Mazen says that he opposes abductions; he says that he wants to proceed on the path to peace. If he stands by what he says, there is only one way to advance peace – and that is to tear up his agreement with Hamas.”

Following are Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting today:

“Last weekend there were three murders in the Arab sector.  Reducing crime in the Arab sector is a goal of the Government and it needs to be a goal of the country.  I appreciate the fact that there are increasing voices from within the Arab sector, from its leaders, mayors and citizens, calling for stepped-up law enforcement within Arab communities and villages.  I think that this is an important change.  I add to this my call for enlistment in the civilian service, within which it will also be possible to combine actions for increased law enforcement.  The community can help itself.  The Arab sector can help itself vis-à-vis increased law enforcement by volunteering in the civilian service as well.

Last week I attended a conference that the Government organized on increasing the involvement of Israeli Arabs in Israel’s economic growth.  We spoke there about the steps to involve them in the economy, education, transportation, access to jobs and many other issues.  I think that all of these things are important.  While the Government has invested billions of shekels in moving forward on these goals in the Arab sector, I would like to say that without law enforcement, none of these steps will achieve the goal that we are hoping for and striving toward – i.e. the integration of Israeli Arabs in the State of Israel’s progress.

Alongside all of these actions that we are doing and alongside this partnership, there must also be partnership in enforcing the law.  We will do our part.  I expect a practical response by Arab sector community representatives regarding increased law enforcement in their communities.”

Poll shows hardening of Jewish-Arab attitudes

The number of Arab Israelis who deny Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish and Zionist state rose to 66.4 percent in 2010 while 29.5 percent opposed its existence under any terms, a poll said.

The survey of 1,411 Jewish and Arab Israeli adults conducted by Haifa University professor Sammy Smooha and published on Sunday said the respective numbers in 2003 were 61.4 percent and 11.2 percent.

Indicating growing radicalisation in the views of each group about the other, the 2010 survey found that 32.5 percent of Jewish Israelis supported revoking their Arab compatriots’ right to vote, compared to 24 percent in 1985….READ MORE
