Southern Israeli cities came under rocket fire again for a fifth night despite claims by Gaza terrorists they were committed to a “ceasefire.” rockets ashkelon

Residents in the coastal city of Ashkelon raced for cover as the Color Red air raid siren blared its warning at about 7:40 p.m. local time.

Two medium-range Grad Katyusha missiles, fired by terrorists in northern Gaza, exploded in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council district. Both landed in open areas, although one set off a brush fire in a field that quickly ignited, dry from the summer heat.

Earlier in the day, a rocket struck an empty building in the Eshkol Regional Council district as well. No physical injuries were reported in any of the attacks.

The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) terrorist group had announced earlier Monday in a statement on its website that it would adhere to a Hamas-led ceasefire.

However, more than a dozen rockets were fired Sunday night after the so-called truce was imposed.

No Gaza-based group took responsibility for the attacks.

A deadly Grad Katyusha missile barrage on Be’er Sheva Saturday evening left a 38-year-old man dead and eight others seriously wounded. Ofakim was also targeted, as were numerous other southern Israeli cities and communities. Nearly 40 people were hospitalized due to severe anxiety.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today (Monday), 22.8.11, in Jerusalem, met with a delegation of 25 Republican members of the US House of Representatives, led by Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price.

Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized the direct links between the terrorists in Gaza and the Iranian regime and said that, “Those who fire missiles at Israel are supported by Iran with weapons, money and training.  They constitute a forward Iranian post on our borders.  Just as Iran threatens us, so too it threatens the US.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu thanked the US and the Congress for their strong support of Israel.  He noted the successes of the Iron Dome system in intercepting missiles and added that he intends to station additional batteries in order to defend Israeli cities.

Palestinians announce ceasefire after five-day rocket barrage

Palestinian factions in Gaza appeared to be observing a ceasefire with Israel reportedly brokered by Egypt.

The Popular Resistance Committee, blamed for last week’s coordinated attacks near Eilat that left eight Israelis dead, on Monday announced a “temporary halt of rocket fire,” according to reports.

Hamas reportedly agreed to enforce the ceasefire on smaller Palestinian terrorist groups in Gaza.

Israeli officials told reporters that the ceasefire was unilaterally declared by the Palestinians. Still, Israel has not launched any retaliatory strikes on Gaza since midnight on Sunday.

At least four rockets from Gaza were fired at Israel early Monday morning. One was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system and one landed near a public building in Israel’s south, damaging the building.

The ceasefire comes after a five-day barrage of rockets fired from Gaza on southern Israel, to which Israel responded to with retaliatory strikes on sites in Gaza. Twelve rockets were fired at Israel after the original ceasefire was to go into effect on Sunday afternoon.

Some 3,000 people turned out for the kickoff event in Israel of conservative American talk-show host Glenn Beck’s four-day rally.glenn beck rally

Beck professed his support for Israel and the Jewish people at the event at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Caesarea on Sunday night. He was joined on stage by historian David Barton, Rabbi Shlomo Riskin of Efrat in the West Bank, author Mike Evans, and Pastor John Hagee, the evangelical pastor at the helm of Christians United for Israel.

“We are not alone,” Riskin said in Caesarea. “We are Jews and not Christians; you Christians, nevertheless, have the courage to love us in our otherness. We are profoundly grateful for your courage to love us and stand with us.”

Beck said, “There’s an important distinction of saying I love Israel, I defend Israel, and not separating that from the Jewish people. Make sure to say not that we only love Israel, but we love the Jewish people as they are.”

Some 2,000 Christians, mostly American, accompanied Beck to Israel for the event.

The main program of the four-day rally, called Restoring Courage, is to come Wednesday night at the Davidson Center in Jerusalem. The event, with space for 2,000 people, is sold out. Beck originally had wanted to hold the event on the Temple Mount.

Israel Brief August 22, 2011: Israel Home Front Command “No Need to Panic” about Southern Israel Rocket Attacks

Israel: “No Need to Panic”

While Israel’s skies are still raining rockets despite an alleged “ceasefire” local radio announcers are broadcasting bravery to bolster its citizens who are facing the fire.

After days in which mortar shells and missiles of all ranges have been fired rockets ashkelonat southern Israel, local radio announcers have been reviewing the defense instructions of Home Front Command – and stressing the importance of following them to the letter.

“When one hears the air raid siren, one must immediately proceed directly to a safe space,” a radio announcer quietly reminded his listeners in a calm voice during a recent broadcast on the popular local southern radio station, Radio Darom.

“One does not need to run, nor does one need to panic. There is a full minute’s travel time for the missile to reach Be’er Sheva from Gaza, 60 seconds, in which to find shelter – more than enough time,” he said soothingly, “so don’t run. Just don’t dawdle. If you are traveling in a car, park and leave the car. Knock on the nearest door or enter the nearest shelter.

“I am sure that anyone with a shelter will share their safe space with you in such times,” he added in a comforting tone. The announcer also reminded listeners not to leave the shelter for at least 10 minutes after impact is heard in order to be sure there is no secondary attack.

That last bit of information was especially important; Police Commissioner Yochanan Danino commented to reporters regretfully at one missile impact site last Friday, “This could have been prevented – this event could have ended with no casualties.”

He called on residents to stay indoors and avoid gathering in public places, even though many have expressed real curiosity about the Iron Dome anti-missile system and the desire to watch it in action.

“I know that the Iron Dome looks like fireworks (when it operates) and it draws people out on the streets,” Danino said, “but we must put a stop to it. We need to put our curiosity aside,” he appealed.

Even though the Hamas terrorist rulers of Gaza allegedly initiated a ceasefire late Sunday night, the so-called truce had already been violated more than a dozen times within its first 24 hours. It was also unclear how many of Gaza’s numerous terrorist organizations have actually signed on to cooperate with the agreement.

Jon Voight Visits Rocket Attack Victims

The people who are hospitalized in the Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva after being wounded in the rocket attacks over the weekend received a surprise visit on Sunday from none other than American actor Jon Voight.

Israel’s Channel 2 News reported that Voight came to the hospital to express his support for Israel and to strengthen those who were wounded.

“I am here to express my love and my loyalty to Israel,” Voight told Channel 2, emphasizing that he sees in his presence in Israel a mission, and that part of his job is to prevent the misperception of Israel in other countries.

“I’m here to fight the propaganda and lies distributed against Israel,” he said, adding, “Chabad has given me the opportunity to visit the wounded and I was glad to come.”

Voight, an ardent supporter of Israel, visited the country in January along with Republican politician Mike Huckabee.

During that visit Voight said that Jonathan Pollard did not have a fair trial due in part to anti-Semitism. He revealed the secret conversation between Pollard and his father that could have changed everything.

In the past, Voight authored a scathing open letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, accusing him of “putting Israel in harm’s way.”
