On the third day of escalating violence between Israel and Gaza, air raid sirens cried out in Israel’s two largest cities, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as residents moved into underground shelters, NBC reporters on the scene said.

At least one rocket fired from Gaza toward Jerusalem landed outside the city, which is more than 60 miles from the Gaza Strip, according to NBC’s Martin Fletcher. There were no injuries or damage. This was the first Palestinian rocket to reach the vicinity of Jerusalem since 1970.

Earlier, at least one rocket fired toward coastal Tel Aviv fell into the sea.

“The rocket landed off the shores of Tel Aviv,” a police spokesman told Reuters. This was the second attack on Tel Aviv in as many days, with rockets nearly hitting the city on Thursday….READ MORE

U.S. Senate resolution backs Israel’s actions in Gaza

Source: JTA, 11-15-12

Thirty U.S. senators have signed on to a resolution expressing support for Israel’s “inherent right to act in self-defense.”

The non-binding resolution, originally drafted by Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), “expresses unwavering commitment to the security of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state with secure borders, and recognizes and strongly supports its inherent right to act in self-defense to protect its citizens against acts of terrorism.”

The resolution, the first such proposed legislation in the wake of Israeli airstrikes launched Wednesday in retaliation for rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, may come to a vote as early as Thursday evening.

Unlike statements of support for Israel’s actions from the Obama administration, the Senate resolution does not call on both sides to exercise restraint or express regret at casualties on both sides….READ MORE

Thousands attend funeral in Jerusalem for Toulouse victims

Thousands gathered in Jerusalem for the funeral of the four victims of the attack on a Jewish school in Toulouse, France.

Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, 30, his two young sons Gabriel and Arieh, and Myriam Monsonego, the 7-year-old daughter of the Ozar Hatorah school’s headmaster, were buried Wednesday morning as police in Toulouse remained in a standoff with the chief suspect in the attack.

The school reopened Wednesday for the first time since Monday’s attack, in which a man riding a motorbike opened fire outside the school where students were waiting to enter the building at the start of the school day.

“Your grief, your pain is ours, too,” French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said at the funeral. “All of France is in shock.” Juppe said that France would work to fight against anti-Semitism.

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin also spoke at the funeral.

“In Toulouse and Jerusalem, in New York and Buenos Aires, Jews of all factions stand with us with deep pain in their hearts and tears in their eyes,” he said. “Again we stand before small, silent bodies, before small graves.”

Prior to the funeral, the parents of Myriam Monsonego and the pregnant wife and mother of the Sandlers arrived at a Jerusalem funeral home to say their final goodbyes to their loved ones, whose bodies arrived in Israel following a memorial service at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, with President Nicolas Sarkozy and Prime Minister Francois Fillon in attendance, Haaretz reported.

In a meeting before the funeral, Israeli President Shimon Peres thanked Juppe in French for his actions in the wake of the attack, calling them a “special expression of the deep ties between France and Israel.”

“Your arrival and the actions of President Sarkozy in light of these harsh events prove that Israel and France are on the same front both in seeking peace and in the total war against terrorism,” Peres said. “The people in Israel and in the Diaspora communities were moved by the expressions of grief and consolation that have been voiced in France and by the government’s actions. Children are more precious than anything, and everything must be done to ensure their peace, in the future as well.”

“This was an abhorrent and unacceptable murder that can hardly be described,” Juppe said. “I came to express the solidarity of the French people with the people of Israel, which felt that its children were murdered. The blood of our two peoples was spilled in this murder.”

By his own account, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to Washington this month with two goals. One was to continue his 15-year campaign to push Iran’s nuclear program to the top of the world’s agenda. That mission was accomplished, Netanyahu declared to the Knesset on Wednesday. The other aim was to hear Washington acknowledge that Israel has the right to launch a military operation on its own against Iran if it sees fit. “This position was positively received in the United States, I would even say in the most profound way,” he said.

With that, the Israeli Premier launched an extended argument for defying American requests for restraint and going ahead with a strike on Iran. He cited as precedent the bold calls of three of his predecessors: David Ben-Gurion’s decision to announce independence in 1948 despite the U.S. Secretary of State’s advice to wait; Levi Eshkol’s decision to launch the 1967 Six-Day War despite President Lyndon Johnson’s warning; and Menachem Begin’s 1981 decision to strike Saddam Hussein’s nuclear reactor at Osirak (though Ronald Reagan appeared mostly amused when he heard about that strike, famously remarking, “Boys will be boys!”).

“I presented the example I just gave you to my hosts in Washington,” Netanyahu reported, “and I believe that the first goal I set — to strengthen the recognition of Israel’s right to defend itself — I think that goal was achieved.”

Never mind that, by the end of the speech, Netanyahu sounded as though the target of an Israeli attack would be the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian enclave from which militants launched more than 200 missiles over the previous week, many of them supplied by Iran. “Gaza equals Iran,” he said, concluding the speech with the warning: “Sooner or later, Iran’s terror base in Gaza will be uprooted.” Analysts came away from the session convinced that the first target remains Tehran and debated whether he was indeed serious about going it alone or merely giving the appearance in order to keep international pressure on Iran….READ MORE

Mr. Speaker, I have been sitting here for hours, listening and enjoying myself.  It is just like the reception at Aipac.  MK Wilf was there, as well as MK Dalia Itzik and Minister Yossi Peled.  I missed this place, the praise, the compliments, the manners, and above all, Israeli understatement.  In short, I missed you.

I am not being sarcastic when I say this.  I appreciate the purpose for this meeting, hearing specific problems which allows me, at the very least, to try to address various problems bothering us in a practical manner.  However, before I begin, I would like to thank the residents in the South and the heads of local authorities there, the IDF commanders and soldiers and the Israel Security Agency.

It is said that the job of Prime Minister of Israel is one of the most complex ones in the world.  I can tell you from experience: there is truth to this statement, but even during difficult hours, there are moments that give one small comfort and warm the heart.  This was the case this week when I met with the Iron Dome soldiers, men and women who are protecting all our homes.

By the way, in the age of missiles this statement is very accurate.  They are protecting our homes.  There were soldiers there who were from the area, from Ashdod, but also from the Galilee.  They are protecting all our homes.  I felt the same way when I met with the residents of the South and their heads of the local authorities.  They are an important component in our national resilience.  Therefore, I am certain that I speak for all the members of Knesset when I say that I salute them all.  They certainly deserve it.

I would like to clarify that there is no such thing as hermetic defense and there never will be.  The combination of offensive readiness, defensive readiness and national resilience is a winning combination and we must nurture it.

I would like to say something to my colleagues, the Ministers and members of Knesset.  During my recent visit to Washington, I set two goals: the first goal was to clarify that Israel has the right to defend itself by itself against any danger.  The second goal was to raise the threat of Iran’s nuclear armament to the top of the international community’s list of priorities.

With regard to the first goal, the recognition of

Israel’s right to defend itself – there are those for whom this right seems self-evident.  However, we had a previous Prime Minister, important and wise – Menachem Begin – who said that sometimes it is important to restate that which is self-evident.  So I decided to do that, forcefully.  Israel has the right to defend itself and, if necessary, to realize that right.  This position was positively received in the United States, I would even say in the most profound way.

This position has earned absolute support from the American people.  It has earned resounding approval in the Congress.  I heard it from the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Democratic leadership, the Republican leadership – from everyone.  And it has also earned official recognition from the White House.

President Obama told me very explicitly during my visit, and I quote, “Israel must have the ability to defend itself, by itself, against any threat”.  He also added, “Israel has the sovereign right to make its own decisions with regard to its security”.

I appreciate the President’s statements, and I appreciate the deep and staunch alliance we have with the United States of America.  As I said in Washington, in light of what is occurring in our region, in the Middle East and even beyond, this alliance between Israel and the US is prominent.  However, there is something even more prominent and that is our right, our duty, to be the masters of our own fate.

Israel has never left its fate in the hands of others, not even in the hands of our best friends.  This is the supreme duty I am charged with as Prime Minister of Israel.  It is the supreme duty all Prime Ministers of Israel are charged with.  It was this duty that David Ben-Gurion upheld when he declared the establishment of the country in 1948.

The American then-Secretary of State, the legendary George Marshall – and I say legendary because he was a World War Two hero – asked Ben-Gurion to wait.  He said that there was time.  However, Ben-Gurion did not wait, he decided to declare the establishment of the country.  Prime Minister Levy Eshkol also upheld this duty during the waiting period in 1967, when the stranglehold around Israel grew tighter.  On the eve of the Six Day War, he sent Abba Even to the White House to ask the United States to fulfill the written commitment they gave Israel when it withdrew from the Sinai in 1956 and open the Straits of Tiran.  President Johnson asked Abba Even to wait.  He was told that it was not the time.  More than that, they told him, “If you act alone – you will stay alone”.  However, Eshkol upheld his duty and he acted.

Finally, in 1981, that same duty guided Menachem Begin as he faced the question of the Iraqi nuclear reactor.  He was well aware of the international criticism that would come, including, by the way, from our friend, the United States and President Reagan.  He knew there would be such criticism if we acted to destroy the Iraqi reactor.  However, he did his duty and acted.  Let me tell you, my friends, with time it became clear that our relations with the United States not only were not harmed, they grew even stronger.

We would prefer that Iran abandon its nuclear program peacefully.  Everyone prefers this, and of course, so do I.  However, the duty I am charged with is to defend Israel’s independent ability to defend itself against any challenge.

I presented the example I just gave you to my hosts in Washington, and I believe that the first goal I set, to strengthen the recognition of Israel’s right to defend itself – I think that goal was achieved.

The second goal of my visit, to raise Iran’s nuclear armament to the top of the international community’s list of priorities – I believe that goal was also achieved.  I would like to clarify to you that this is not the result of one visit.  I have been acting to this end, together with my colleagues here, methodically for over 15 years.  I have always believed that an Iran armed with nuclear weapons would pose an existential threat to Israel and a serious threat to the well-being and security of the entire world.  I warned against this threat even when it was not popular to do so, and even when it was unacceptable – when many leaders in Israel and around the world preferred to ignore Iran’s nuclear program and its repercussions.

There were those who believed, and probably still believe, that an agreement with the Palestinians is the solution, that it would lead to a solution of the Iranian problem.  As if an agreement with Mahmoud Abbas would stop the centrifuges.  Let’s make a deal and the centrifuges will stop spinning.  Whoever wants to believe this can do so, but he is simply burying his head in the sand.

There are many reasons to come to an agreement with the Palestinians: because we want peace; because we want calm; because I do not want a binational state.  However, thinking that an agreement with Abbas will stop Iran and its satellite states – this is a dangerous illusion.  I must admit that some people excel at illusions.

I had just returned from Washington, and I heard several members of Knesset and others say, “It is very good that you raised the issue of a nuclear Iran to the top of the international community’s list of priorities.  But look – it is the Palestinian issue that is exploding in our faces”.

Understand, the dominant factor that motivates these events in Gaza is not the Palestinian issue.  The dominant factor that motivates these events in Gaza is Iran.

Gaza equals Iran.

Where do the missiles come from?  From Iran.

Where does the money come from?  From Iran.

Who trains the terrorists?  Iran.

Who builds the infrastructure?  Iran.

I have said this many times: who gives the orders?  Iran.

Gaza is a forward operating base for Iran.

I heard some people say that a third- or fourth-rate terrorist organization is acting against a million citizens in the State of Israel.  That is not true.  Iran is operating against us.

I hope that if not all, at least most members here and the public understand that the terrorist organizations in Gaza – Hamas and Jihad, as well as Hezbollah in Lebanon – are taking shelter under an Iranian umbrella.

Now imagine what will happen if that umbrella becomes nuclear.  Imagine that behind these terrorist organizations stands a country that calls for our destruction and it is armed with nuclear weapons.

Are you ready for this?  I am not ready for this!  And any responsible leader understands that we cannot let this happen – because of nuclear terror and the nuclear threat, but also because of the strengthening of conventional terror and the firing of missiles at us.

A Prime Minister of Israel cannot entrust the ability to act against this threat to others.

I know there are people who claim that I am terrifying people.  I heard those same people say exactly the same thing when my colleagues and I warned them against the Disengagement, when we said that Gaza would become an enormous terrorist base – they said I was terrifying people then as well.  I resigned from the government because I was not prepared to be a part of that Disengagement.  When I said they would fire missiles from Gaza on Ashkelon, Beer-Sheva and Ashdod, they said we were sowing panic.  They said a unilateral withdrawal would lead to a breakthrough in peace.  Well, where is that breakthrough?  What peace?

We dragged the entire country into the mud, and we are dealing with a situation that was created as a result of the Disengagement.  We, unlike other people, are dealing responsibly and with discretion with this problem, and we will eventually resolve it, just as we are resolving the other problems we inherited.  We will resolve them too.

They brought Iran into Gaza – we will remove Iran from Gaza.  We did not bring Iran into Gaza – you brought Iran into Gaza!

Wherever we withdrew, Iran entered.  We withdrew from Lebanon, Iran came in.  We withdrew from Gaza, Iran came in.  Some people suggest that we act in a similar manner in Judea and Samaria.  Iran will come in there too.  I cannot believe that there is anyone, despite your yelling, despite your objections and opposition, who does not understand that we cannot repeat this same mistake a third time.

I believe that perhaps all of you, with certain isolated exceptions, understand that we cannot repeat this mistake.  If we come to an agreement with the Palestinians, we must ensure that our security foundations are sound and that Iran cannot enter the territory.  We also know that when we warned that this would happen in Gaza and that a unilateral withdrawal would lead to this exact result, some people ignored those warnings, and today we know the results.  We also know that we cannot agree to this for long.

Our enemies must know that, at the end of the day, Israel will not accept an Iranian base in Gaza.  Sooner or later, Iran’s terror base in Gaza will be uprooted.

The Israel Air Force struck what it called “terror activity sites” in Gaza in response to rockets fired on southern Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces said it hit the two sites, one in southern Gaza and one in central Gaza, overnight Saturday after rockets fired from Gaza struck the northwest Negev. No injuries were reported in the rocket attack on the northwest Negev.

Two Israelis were killed and residential areas in southern Israel were damaged last month in rocket attacks that emanated from Gaza.

ISRAEL POLITICAL BRIEF

ISRAEL POLITICAL BRIEF: ISRAEL NEWS

Address by PM Netanyahu 9.11 Ceremony, Jerusalem House of Quality

Source: PMO, 9-11-11

Dan, I’m just going to speak in Hebrew one sentence.  I want to speak in English in order to speak to American citizens on this day and to citizens of the world.
Firstly, I think Ambassador Shapiro is absolutely right.  There is a remarkable fortitude and resilience to the people of America and the people of Israel and the people of all free societies.  There is a tremendous power in freedom.  There’s a tremendous confidence and yes, sometimes democracies slumber, but they always somehow manage to wake up in time and I believe that there’s no greater bond in facing the scourge of terrorism, the scourge of wild ideologies that have no inhibitions, and the use of violence against innocent civilians, there is no greater bond in this battle than the bond between Israel and America because it reflects the deepest bond of two societies that were born in freedom and that share so many ideals and so many values.
You say Dan that my being here is an expression of our bond, and your being here in Jerusalem today on 9/11 is the same expression of that same bond.
I want to thank Refael Eldor and the members of Jerusalem’s Quality House for bringing in this tremendous exhibit by Robby Berman who happened to be there or wanted to be there – not as a photographer but who made, I think an important contribution to the documentation of the greatest act of terror in history and to the spirit that guided the brave firefighters and policemen and citizens who did everything in their power in that smoke and in that darkness to try to save what lives could be saved.
There is something very powerful on this day – exactly this day, perhaps exactly this hour one decade later.  Historic epochs sometimes take centuries to unfold.  But only ten years have passed since that infamous day on which those remarkable pictures here on display – since those pictures were taken.  But I believe that a decade is long enough to take stock of where we are in this great struggle between civilization and barbarism.
This is the great struggle of our time, but it didn’t begin on September 11th.  9/11did however introduce the world to the dangers of terrorism employed by militant Islam.  It introduced the world to the fanatic creed that guides its adherents.
And 9/11 also launched a decade in which two American Presidents were engaged in this historic confrontation.  During that decade, the forces of civilization have enjoyed many victories.  The Taliban were driven from power.  Saddam Hussein’s regime was toppled.  Osama bin Laden was killed.  And the U.S. President should be congratulated for this action.  I think that it’s something symbolic of the fact that President Obama ordered the elimination of Osama Bin Laden as we close this decade.   That is both a symbolic and substantive victory.  And there were also many terror plots were thwarted during this time.
But still the forces of terror during these years also enjoyed some victories.  They struck in Bali, in London and Madrid, in Mumbai and yes, here in Jerusalem and elsewhere.  They control Lebanon.  They control Gaza.  And they’re racing to develop nuclear weapons in Tehran.
Ten years after 9/11, the possibility that the world’s most dangerous weapons will fall into the hands of the world’s most dangerous regimes – that possibility is all too real.  And the ultimate terrorist nightmare – a potential nuclear terrorist attack – could soon become a real and present danger.

This must not be allowed to happen.  The international community, led by the United States, must do everything in its power to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.  Now with this battle between barbarism and civilization being waged and still undecided in the Middle East, – there is however a new force that has emerged in this region.
Those who demand freedom and opportunity, and those who demand basic human dignity, are rising up against calcified and repressive regimes, regimes that have long denied their peoples the entry ticket into modernity.  But alongside the democrats who are hoping for a better future for themselves and their peoples – alongside them stand militants seeking to return to what they see as a glorious past – a past where a Caliphate stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indus River, and from the Horns of Africa to the gates of Vienna.  This is what possesses their imagination and this is what fires their zeal.
Now Militant Islam has not been a major force in triggering this revolution in the Arab world and throughout the Middle East.  But we must make sure that it will not prove decisive in determining their outcome.  In Egypt, Syria, Libya, in Yemen and elsewhere, militant Islamic forces are trying to hijack the Arab Spring.  They’re trying to preclude any possibility of genuine democracy, progress, and peace.
We saw such an attempt in Cairo two days ago.  I just came here from a meeting with Yonatan, the chief security officer in our Embassy in Cairo and he and his five colleagues displayed a tremendous coolness of judgment in virtually impossible circumstances and they no doubt deserve credit for acting with great courage and great wisdom.   But I want to take this opportunity to convey a special thanks to President Obama who intervened at a crucial moment to help us safeguard our people and return them home.
I think we all face these common foes.  They threaten the new order that we all want to see in the new Arab world.  They reject freedom and they reject modernity and we must be sure that they will not be allowed to destroy the hopes of hundreds of millions throughout the Middle East.
In the last decade, much blood has been spilled and much treasure has been spent.  Too much is at stake for our common future to allow the forces of radical militancies to impose an even greater tyranny on the peoples of the region.
My friends, the pictures on display here cry out to us to remember; to remember those who attacked America; to remember why they attacked America; to remember the many thousands felled by terrorism on 9/11 and the many thousands who were murdered since 9/11; and to remember the thousands of brave soldiers who have paid the ultimate price in fighting terrorism since then.
On this day, let us remember them.   And let us recommit ourselves to doing all in our power to ensure that the forces of barbarism are defeated and that the forces of progress and peace will prevail.
Thank you very much.

Seven injured by Palestinian attacker in Tel Aviv

Seven people were injured in Tel Aviv by a Palestinian who rammed a stolen taxi into a police roadblock outside a nightclub and then got out of the car and began stabbing people.

The attack took place early Monday morning outside the Tel Aviv nightclub Haoman 17. The 20-year-old attacker, a resident of the West Bank town of Nablus, was subdued and taken into custody by Israeli police.

The man hijacked a taxi at 1:30 a.m. and some 10 minutes later drove it into a Border Police roadblock protecting the nightclub, which was packed with more than 1,000 high school students attending a party, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The attacker then got out of the car and shouted “Allahu Akbar!” — Arabic for “God is great!” — as he assaulted people with a knife.

According to The Jerusalem Post, five of those injured in the attack were members of the Border Police. One of those hurt in the attack was seriously injured, two were moderately injured and the rest were lightly injured, the newspaper reported.

Police prevented a huge catastrophe by stopping a Palestinian Authority terrorist who wounded eight people at a Tel Aviv nightclub patronized by approximately 2,000 young people.

Border Police had been preparing for terrorist attacks, and their presence enabled them to stop the terrorist, hailing from Shechem (Nablus) in the Shomron (Samaria), before he could continue his assault with a knife.

The police “prevented a big disaster,” said Police Commander Yochanan Danino.

Dozens of police officers brought down the terrorist, age 25, after he hijacked a taxicab, wounding its driver, and was surprised by a police roadblock, which he slammed into. He then drove on for another half a mile. He then reached a nightclub holding approximately 2,000 young people at a party and continued knifing his victims for a short while until police, alert to his presence and therefore out in numbers, apprehended him.

One Border Police officer suffered wounds in his neck, and the taxi driver was cut on his hands when he tried to yank the knife away from the terrorist.

All of those wounded suffered light to moderate injuries.

The Palestinian Authority has not commented on the terrorist attack. Shechem, from where the terrorist arrived, is under control by the Palestinian Authority, which is committed to dismantling the terrorist infrastructure.

“The incident was further proof of the motivation of terrorists to attack,” Danino said.

The attack still is under investigation, but the Public Security Minister said that the terrorist appears to have acted on his own, bearing out warnings from intelligence officers that “lone terrorists,” without direct involvement of a terrorist organization, are prepared to carry out attacks at any time throughout the country.

A high alert against terror is in effect along the southern border.

Six Injured in Tel Aviv Terror Attack

Six people were injured in a terror attack in southern Tel Aviv overnight Sunday.

The attack occurred after an Arab stole a taxi, ran over a man and lightly injured him, then stabbed several other people at the corner of Abarbanel and Salame Streets in the city.

Magen David Adom reported that one person was stabbed in the head and stomach and was very seriously injured, two people were moderately injured and two others were lightly injured. They were all taken to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.

Voice of Israel radio reported that the attack took place near a popular Tel Aviv night club, and that the terrorist called out “Allah Akhbar” as he stabbed people. It was also reported that he refused to heed the officers’ calls from him to stop, a fact which strengthened officers’ belief that the man is a terrorist.

The terrorist was lightly injured as police took over the cab and apprehended him and was taken to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon.

Police are investigating the incident, and a preliminary investigation has found that the terrorist came from the Shechem area. He initially made his way to Yafo, where he stole the cab and made his way towards southern Tel Aviv.

Rockets Fall in Israel After “Ceasefire”

Source: Virtual Jerusalem, 8-22-11
Southern Israeli cities came under rocket fire again for a fifth night despite claims by Gaza terrorists they were committed to a “ceasefire.” rockets ashkelon

Residents in the coastal city of Ashkelon raced for cover as the Color Red air raid siren blared its warning at about 7:40 p.m. local time.

Two medium-range Grad Katyusha missiles, fired by terrorists in northern Gaza, exploded in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council district. Both landed in open areas, although one set off a brush fire in a field that quickly ignited, dry from the summer heat.

Earlier in the day, a rocket struck an empty building in the Eshkol Regional Council district as well. No physical injuries were reported in any of the attacks.

The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) terrorist group had announced earlier Monday in a statement on its website that it would adhere to a Hamas-led ceasefire.

However, more than a dozen rockets were fired Sunday night after the so-called truce was imposed.

No Gaza-based group took responsibility for the attacks.

A deadly Grad Katyusha missile barrage on Be’er Sheva Saturday evening left a 38-year-old man dead and eight others seriously wounded. Ofakim was also targeted, as were numerous other southern Israeli cities and communities. Nearly 40 people were hospitalized due to severe anxiety.

Palestinians announce ceasefire after five-day rocket barrage

Source: JTA, 8-22-11

Palestinian factions in Gaza appeared to be observing a ceasefire with Israel reportedly brokered by Egypt.

The Popular Resistance Committee, blamed for last week’s coordinated attacks near Eilat that left eight Israelis dead, on Monday announced a “temporary halt of rocket fire,” according to reports.

Hamas reportedly agreed to enforce the ceasefire on smaller Palestinian terrorist groups in Gaza.

Israeli officials told reporters that the ceasefire was unilaterally declared by the Palestinians. Still, Israel has not launched any retaliatory strikes on Gaza since midnight on Sunday.

At least four rockets from Gaza were fired at Israel early Monday morning. One was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system and one landed near a public building in Israel’s south, damaging the building.

The ceasefire comes after a five-day barrage of rockets fired from Gaza on southern Israel, to which Israel responded to with retaliatory strikes on sites in Gaza. Twelve rockets were fired at Israel after the original ceasefire was to go into effect on Sunday afternoon.

A day after terrorist attacks killed 8 Israelis and wounded more than 20, Israeli airstrikes continued to pound targets in Gaza as rockets fell on Israel.

Sixteen rockets were reported fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Friday. One person was seriously injured after a Grad rocket landed in a yeshiva courtyard in the Israeli city of Ashdod, and five others were treated for moderate injuries or shock.

In northern Lachish an empty building sustained light damage after being struck by two rockets, and the Eshkol Regional Council was also struck, with no damage or injuries reported.

A volley of 10 rockets early Friday morning all landed harmlessly in unpopulated areas.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Air Force continued to retaliate for the previous days attacks. On Friday Israeli planes carried out airstrikes throughout Gaza.

The Jerusalem Post reported that seven Hamas security installations were attacked in Friday morning. At least two Palestinians were killed Friday, including a 13-year-old boy in a nearby buildling, and 17 were wounded.

Also Friday, Haaretz reported that a man believed to have been a member of the group that carried out the Thursday attacks killed himself and wounded several Egyptian soldiers in a suicide bombing on the Israeli-Egypt border.

Israel Political Brief August 18, 2011: Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu’s Statement in Response to the Terror Attacks in Eilat that Killed 7, and Injured 33

ISRAEL POLITICAL BRIEF

ISRAEL POLITICAL BRIEF: ISRAEL NEWS

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an official statement on the tragic events that took place on Thursday when terrorists attacked a bus and two cars in Eilat, killing 7 and wounding 33.

The attack was followed by another shooting incident in which fire came from the Egyptian border, attacking IDF troops, leaving one soldier wounded critically, and a number of others injured.

The Prime Minister’s statement:

First I want to send my condolences to the families of the victims of the terror attacks, and the soldiers that fell in the shooting incident in the South. I hurt their hurt. I know that the lives of these families will never return to their prior route.

I also want to send wishes for a quick recovery to the wounded that are in the Israeli hospitals tonight.

We were all witnesses today to [terrorist] forces’ attempt to escalate the level of their attacks when they attacked from the Sinai. If someone thinks Israel will go along with that, they are wrong.

When you attack Israeli citizens we will react immediately and with strength.

This principle was implemented today. The people that hid in Gaza as they gave the order to murder our people are no longer alive. I would like to praise the Shabak (Israel Security Agency) who are responsible for targeting those in Gaza who killed our people in the south.

We must praise the IDF forces, Shabak and the police, the ones who acted quickly in the Sinai and immediately faced and fought the terrorists, preventing further disaster.

If these people think they can hurt our people with no response they will find that they will have to pay a price, a very heavy price.

As the Prime Minister made these statements, more rockets fell near Ashkelon.

In Gaza, Abu Awad Kamel a-Neirab, commander of the Salah a-Din Brigades was killed in an Israeli airstrike around 5:00 PM on Thursday.
