US President Barack Obama at a joint press conference with President Shimon Peres at Peres’ residence in Jerusalem on March 20, 2013. (Photo credit: Uri Lenz/Flash90)President Obama,

It is a great privilege for me and for the people of Israel to host you here in Jerusalem.

It was a pleasure to sit with a true friend like you.

After the meeting we just had, I am even more confident that your vision can transform the Middle East.

Your vision is doable. You arrived here already with an impressive record of answering our needs, particularly and unforgettably in the domain of security.

I want to thank you personally, my dear friend, for the long days and for the sleepless nights which you spend caring for our country, for our future. We live in an age that is both global and domestic. Interests may divide people but vision unites them.

There is no real division between us. There is a common vision uniting us. To confront the dangers. To bring peace closer.

The greatest danger is a nuclear Iran. So you said, so you are acting. We trust your policy which calls to first try non-military means with a clear statement that all other options remain on the table. You have made it clear that your intention is not to contain but to prevent.

We are trying, together, to restart the negotiations with the Palestinians. We have already agreed that the goal is a two state solution. There is no better one and more doable one. We consider the President of the Palestinian Authority, Abu Mazen, as our partner in the effort to stop terror and make peace.

Hamas remains a terror organization that targets innocent civilians. On our northern border Iran’s proxy, Hezbollah, continues to stockpile arms and threaten our civilians while they target innocent people across the world. Hezbollah is destroying Lebanon and supporting the brutal massacre of the Syrian people by President Assad.

Fortunately the Syrian nuclear capability was destroyed but unfortunately the arsenal of chemical weapons remains.

We cannot allow for those weapons to fall into terrorist hands. It could lead to an epic tragedy.

There is an attempt to bring spring to the Arab world.

This is an Arab choice, an Arab initiative. But it may bring as well peace to the region, freedom to the people and economic growth to the Arab states.

If realized, it can lead to a better tomorrow. We pray it will become a reality.

I believe the real division is between skeptics and those who believe in peace.

Your voice will encourage belief. You came to us with a clear message that no one should let skepticism win the day, a vision that says clearly that peace is not only a wish but a possibility.

I fully support your call. There is no other way to make the future better.

There is no better leader to make it possible. Your visit is a historic step in that direction.

We shall journey with you.

יום ראשון כ”ח אדר תשע”ג

The Prime Minister’s Office held a preparatory meeting ahead of US President Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to Israel. In addition to personnel from the PMO, representatives from the President’s Residence, the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry, the Israel Police, the Jerusalem Municipality, Ben-Gurion International Airport and other agencies also attended the meeting.

The general outline of the visit was presented:

Wednesday, 20 March 2013
* Welcoming ceremony at BGI Airport
* Presentation of Iron Dome (may be moved to the end of the visit)
* Welcoming ceremony and meeting at the President’s Residence
* Meeting, press conference and dinner with the Prime Minister

Thursday, 21 March 2013
* Visit the Shrine of the Book (home of the Dead Sea Scrolls) at the Israel Museum
* Visit exhibition of innovative technology at the Israel Museum
* Visit the Palestinian Authority
* State dinner with the President

Friday, 22 March 2013
* Wreath-laying ceremony at Herzl’s grave
* Wreath-laying ceremony at Rabin’s grave
* Visit Yad Vashem
* Departure ceremony at BGI Airport

National Security Adviser Yaakov Amidror said: “It is very important that the visit be marked by three points: One, that it go smoothly from start to finish. It is important for us that the Prime Minister and the President have fruitful and productive talks – this is the basis for the continuation of work over the next four years. It is important to us that the President and all those who watch the visit see the beautiful Land of Israel as much as possible given the short schedule. Cooperation between all elements – among all the Israelis, and between us and the Americans – is also vital for the success of the visit.”

Gil Sheffer, the head of the Prime Minister’s bureau, said: “Arrangements by the Israel Police, the ISA, the Foreign Ministry, the Prime Minister’s Office, the President’s Residence and staff at the official sites that the US President will visit are all in their final stages. Tomorrow, according to the schedule, we will go to the sites that the President will visit. In this context, we have already completed preparations ahead of the exhibit that will be held at the Israel Museum at which technological developments will be presented in the fields of – inter alia – renewable energy, search and rescue technology, and robotics. The exhibit will present Israel as a technological leader. National Economic Council Chairman Prof. Eugene Kandel chaired the committee that selected the items in the exhibit.”

Edna Halabani, head of the Prime Minister’s Office department for international visits and liaison, said: “There is excellent cooperation with the Americans and with the various agencies: The Foreign Ministry, the President’s Residence, the ISA, the Israel Police, the Jerusalem Municipality and the various branches of the Prime Minister’s Office, including the Deputy Director General and the National Information Directorate. The cooperation is very good.”

Head of the National Information Directorate, Liran Dan, said: “We are prepared for the arrival of hundreds of journalists ahead of US President Obama’s visit. Our goal is to give these hundreds of journalists the best service possible. We will set up media centers to provide information to journalists 24 hours a day. Emphasis will be given to providing information via social networks; to this end, we have launched a PMO application for smartphones. Our goal for the visit is to emphasize two things: One is the deep and abiding connection between Israel and the US. The second is that we want to utilize the international attention that will be on the State of Israel for the 48 hours of President Obama’s visit in order to stress Israel’s status as a technological leader.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, today made the following remarks at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting:

“I would like to praise the Israel Police, with the support of the IDF, for its rapid and determined operation to evacuate the Palestinian gathering in the area between Jerusalem and Maale Adumim. As soon as I was updated on the Palestinian gathering, I ordered its immediate evacuation and it was indeed carried out last night in the best possible manner. Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch, I would like to thank you and Israel Police Commissioner Inspector-General Yohanan Danino on the excellent operation; I am certain that to the degree that it will yet be necessary to watch over the area, you will do so as effectively as possible. We will not allow anyone to harm the contiguity between Jerusalem and Maale Adumim.

Over the weekend, somebody criticized my government over the investments we made in security. Indeed, in contrast to governments that invested billions in the disengagement, we invested billions in building up our strength so as to ensure the security of Israel’s citizens. We invested and we will continue to invest in Iron Dome, which stopped the missiles, in the security fence in the south, which stopped the infiltrators, in cybersecurity and in the offensive and defensive capabilities of the IDF, Mossad and ISA.

These capabilities have already found expression in various areas, including during Operation Pillar of Defense, which was conducted responsibly and wisely and which achieved its goals. It is no coincidence that the security situation in the country is the best it has been in years and this is in the face of the great security upheaval around us and in our region. I would like to commend the ministers who dealt with the issue and the government for backing the important operations to ensure the security of Israel’s citizens.”

Four to six inches of snow fell in Jerusalem Wednesday night into Thursday morning, snarling traffic and closing schools and government offices.

The snow in Jerusalem resulted from a large storm system that produced days of inclement weather in the Middle East.

Low pressure tracks through the Middle East Wednesday (WeatherBell.com) Initially, the storm brought mainly wind and heavy rains that caused flooding and damage in some areas.

But as cold air wrapped into low pressure tracking through the region, temperatures plummeted and snow reports spiked. Up to three feet of snow fell on Mount Hermon in northern Israel the Inquisitr reported. Snow was also observed in areas of the West Bank, Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt…

Reuters called the snowstorm the “worst” in 20 years in Jerusalem, but government officials and clergy put a much more positive spin on the glistening blanket of white.

“Jerusalem has many colors,” President Shimon Peres said. “But when she is white, it so rare, so beautiful, so unifying.”

YNetNews spoke to “prominent kabbalist” Rabbi David Batzri who said the snow was an indicator of forgiveness from God .

“The kabbalists torment themselves and pray for snow, which is a sign that the Jewish people’s sins are being forgiven and erased,” Batzri said….READ MORE

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this afternoon at the Israel Police national traffic control center in Beit Dagan, held an assessment of the situation regarding the stormy weather. Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch, Israel Police Commissioner Insp.-Gen. Yohanan Danino, Israel Police Traffic Division Commander Bruno Stein, as well as representatives from the emergency and rescue services, the Union of Local Authorities and the various infrastructure bodies also attended.

At the start of the discussion, Prime Minister Netanyahu said: “We have waited many years for this rain. I hope that they will be blessed rains and not claim victims; therefore, I call upon the public to continue listening to the instructions of the rescue forces and to act with caution. I thank citizens for their patience. They understand that after the traffic jams are over, we will have full reservoirs and we need this water.

I convened this meeting, first, in order to be updated, and I am pleased to see that things are well under control, with the complete cooperation of all bodies. I would like to thank all those involved – Israel Police office, firefighters, IDF soldiers, IDF Home Front Command, the Public Security Ministry, Magen David Adom, the Israel Electric Company, the Tax Authority, the Union of Local Authorities, and local council heads. The systems are working well. I have instructed Prime Minister’s Office Director-General Harel Locker to consider compensation for those who have been hurt as a result of the weather.

I appreciate the brave work – in the intense cold and strong winds – of all those involved. The emergency and rescue forces are struggling around the clock in the storm in order to save lives; on behalf of all Israelis, I thank you.

One month after Operation Pillar of Defense, the rescue forces are again proving that the Israeli home front can rely on them. In the stormy weather, their sole concern is to help Israeli citizens, and they have been very successful.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem, made the following statement:

“Israel is prepared to live in peace with a Palestinian state, but for peace to endure, Israel’s security must be protected.  The Palestinians must recognize the Jewish State and they must be prepared to end the conflict with Israel once and for all.  None of these vital interests, these vital interests of peace, none of them appear in the resolution that will be put forward before the General Assembly today and that is why Israel cannot accept it.  The only way to achieve peace is through agreements that are reached by the parties directly; through direct negotiations between themselves, and not through UN resolutions that completely ignore Israel’s vital security and national interests.  And because this resolution is so one-sided, it doesn’t advance peace, it pushes it backwards.

As for the rights of the Jewish people in this land, I have a simple message for those people gathered in the General Assembly today: No decision by the UN can break the 4000-year-old bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel.”

On the third day of escalating violence between Israel and Gaza, air raid sirens cried out in Israel’s two largest cities, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as residents moved into underground shelters, NBC reporters on the scene said.

At least one rocket fired from Gaza toward Jerusalem landed outside the city, which is more than 60 miles from the Gaza Strip, according to NBC’s Martin Fletcher. There were no injuries or damage. This was the first Palestinian rocket to reach the vicinity of Jerusalem since 1970.

Earlier, at least one rocket fired toward coastal Tel Aviv fell into the sea.
